A clock is the beating heart of a home!
A clock is the beating heart of a home!
Devices to track time date back as long as civilisation itself, but what we may recognise today as “clocks” started to appear in Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. Clockmaking in the Britain became recognised in the 17th Century, with the Clockmakers Company (the Livery Company controlling clock and watch trade standards in London) being recognised by King Charles I Charter in 1631.
Lead by London based makers, Britain set clockmaking world standards in innovation during this period, improving timekeeping accuracy while the clocks themselves reflected not only the makers technical skills but the style and flamboyance of the era. As the 19th century progressed into the Victorian era, innovation continued but production also became streamlined and mass production helped to offer clocks and watches to all.
All clocks have a story to tell, but at Woking Antique Clocks our interest is mainly in clocks of the late 18th and early 19thcentury. This is a time of proven reliable design, but still individual craftsmanship and flair. Many clocks of this period were signed with the clockmaker’s name and the place made, offering a link to a town or county, and a window into a maker and their past. We supply all our clocks (unless otherwise stated) as fully working and with a 6-month warranty.
Having a clock is a chance to own and enjoy a craftsman’s skills of a bygone age; remember a special place; or perhaps the purchase could be to celebrate a special occasion. Not to mention the useful function of telling the time as well!
In reading this piece you may appreciate our passion and interest in clocks, and we would be delighted to discuss this and your requirements further with you! For further information please contact John or Tara on enquries@wokingantiqueclocks.com.
